Better Late Than Never?

Well, to be honest, I’m not sure about that. But as I spent the whole of January and part of February getting my end-of-year music lists sorted and catalogued, it would be a waste for me not to share them, especially when I said I would.

Before we start, a small disclaimer. I was on heavy medication during the time I did these lists (and still am) so I kept deleting stuff before I’d finished with it, which was both annoying and time-consuming, and after listening to over 4,000 songs in one month I was away with the fairies. But I’m still happy with the results. Also, this is why I’ve been nowhere near the blog this year. I definitely still listen to music (currently I’m going through the January playlist so I’m a bit behind), it’s just a bit tricky when all I want to do is nap because my brain isn’t firing on all cylinders.

Also, a reminder that I use Spotify categories for my playlists. If they say a single has 9 tracks, or an album has 3 tracks, so do I (although I will moan about it. I still haven’t forgiven a particular Chinese artist for releasing 7 different singles on the same day – mate, just release them all as an EP and do everyone a favour). I also classify all single recordings with more than one artist as a group rather than solo. I don’t have enough time in my life to work out whether a featured artist gets one line or half a song, so they all go under group. For EPs and albums, it’s a bit more nuanced. If every track is with another artist, then it’s group but if 90% of the album is features but they have a couple of solo tracks then they’ll be solo (probably).

Everything covered in this post can be found in the excel workbook here. It’s worth taking a look if you’re interested as it covers A LOT more than the stuff I’ve mentioned, including my top 3 album, EP and singles of each month by country.

Oh yeah, and finally, obviously these selections are my personal choice. If you don’t like any of them or think I made the wrong choices you’re perfectly welcome to that opinion – after all, the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same things – but please don’t bother commenting and telling me that. You’re not going to change my mind and it’s always better to be pleasant. I am more than happy for you to recommend a track, EP, or album you think I might have missed and should definitely check out, but bear in mind that with the amount of music I listened to last year, if they’re in any way prominent in Asian music, I will probably have heard it and just wasn’t impressed enough to put it in my top 20 (and believe me, every entry fights really hard to be there when I listened to a total of 7,742 different albums, EPs and singles over the year).

So, with that said . . . on with the show.

ASIAN MUSIC 2025 – TOP TWENTIES

Song of the Year

I’m sure the thing you’re most interested in is what was my song of year from the 14,400 individual tracks (25,090 tracks in total) that I listened to in 2025. The answer is:

我之后的你 (Lover After Me) by WayV

Although the whole album is excellent, I fell so hard for this song that it’s currently at #9 in my all-time most listened to songs (according to last.fm). This is no mean feat for a song that was released in December 2025.

If you want to know who else is in my top 20 songs of the year list, you can find out here, although I will be mentioning some of them as we go. I think it’s quite an interesting selection and is a great playlist if you want to get a flavour of some of the best Asian music released in 2025.

You can also find a link to the playlist in the sidebar 👑👑👑

Albums

The top 5 were never going to be a surprise, especially if you read the previous couple of posts. Both B.I’s Wonderland and CRAVITY’s Dare to Crave were my top two albums in the mid-year review, and I talked about them both here. Both also feature tracks that are in my top 20 songs of the year (Lover boi and Marionette respectively). WayV ’s 白色定格 (Eternal White) actually surpassed CRAVITY in terms of the number of listens by the year end, but overall, I felt CRAVITY won out as the reissue added more excellent songs to the ones that were already on the original album and split the listening count.

Although 白色定格 (Eternal White) is marketed as a winter album, most of the tracks are easy to listen to all year round. For me the album has a more mature outlook than the group’s earlier works, which suits the slower, warmer and more cosy tone of a winter album. The members have grown up, are empathetic, and are even more attractive for it. Highlights include Stay, the English track, which sees them showing support and understanding of a loved one, and my favourite song, 我之后的你 (Lover After Me), which is a whole-hearted wish that their ex can be happy in a future relationship.

Fourth place was taken by WayV member TEN’s hugely impressive STUNNER, an album chock full of banging tracks, so it’s hard to pick a favourite. With his Japanese EP Humanity also making my EP top 20, and Sweet As Sin from this album making my top 20 favourite songs of the year list, in my opinion it really does cement him as one of the most talented members of NCT.

Rounding out the top 5 is Ryosuke Yamada’s RED, which took a slight drop from the mid-year results but is still one of my most played albums of the year, and the one I took most time trying to decide what my favourite track is (and I still haven’t decided – HUSTLER eventually made it onto the list, but on another day it could easily have been CARNIVAL or VELVET).

EPs (or mini albums as the K-Pop industry likes to term them)

This category was slightly more interesting as GOT7 were the only pick from the mid-year review that made it into the top 5.

The top spot was taken by WayV and their magnificent BIG BANDS, an absolute stomper of an album, which, along with Wonderland and Dare to Crave, almost literally kept me alive during my hospital stay back in late summer. I can’t express just how deeply I fell for the big band sound and the vibrant beats. Fun, funky and sexy, everything we’ve come to expect from WayV and more. Again, it was hard to choose a favourite track, but WOAH finally won out on the day I made the list.

The second place EP was something of a surprise entry, as it too wasn’t released until December, but ASH ISLAND’s BURN PART. 1 swept straight into my favourites and took the runner up spot. I’ve been a fan of his for several years, but from the opening seconds of Midnight Sky, which takes 4th place in my songs of the year list, I knew this was something special and was an EP that was going to capture my heart. Bold and rocky, I just love it, and it has songs that feature B.I and Bang Yedam, so how could I not?

Kim Jae Joong started his re-emergence (after years of being blacklisted from everywhere thanks to SM 🤬) with the excellent Flower Garden in 2024, then captured my heart completely with the even better Beauty in Chaos, released in May, and the Japanese version of the album, Rhapsody, in October. As an ex-member of TVXQ! Jae Joong’s vocals are never in doubt, but these EPs go hard, as ROCK STAR and my personal favourite, Last VoW, admirably demonstrate.

GOT7’s WINTER HEPTAGON, released in January, held its own against hundreds of other EPs to make it to fourth place with a stylish and sexy album from our favourite chaos merchants. The perfect return from a long, long military era.

In fifth place is my beloved ONEW’s second outing since joining his new label, CONNECTION. From the emotional opener WINNER, through to the upbeat and funky Conversation and beyond, this EP showcases his incredible vocals to perfection. Like TEN, ONEW has more than one entry in my top 20 lists. His Japanese release SAKU, joins this one in the top 20 soloist EPs, and the gorgeous PERCENT makes it into the top 20 albums.

SINGLES

Every year it seems that one or two songs grab me, won’t let go, and sweep away all other competition. This year was a bumper year in that regard, particularly in the singles category where not one but four excellent singles battled for supremacy and the ear worm title. Although for this list &TEAM won with the wonderful Going in Blind, displacing Leeon’s awesome Supernatural from its mid-year top spot, and JUNHEE’s hyper-addictive Supernova, beat out previous second place BIG Naughty and LEE CHANHYUK’s MUSIC, they all deserve to be at the top. EPEX’s FOOL (눈물나게 고마워) [Eng Ver.], while not quite taking over in the same way as the other entries in the top 5 is nevertheless an excellent song, and tops what was a fantastic year for them (check out the workbook to see all the places they appear this year – I’m so proud of my kids).

The full top 20 list of singles can be found here and is also linked in the right-hand side list 👑

For all singles information, start here.

I had intended to do full breakdowns of the A and B-sides as I did for the other categories, but these were some of the playlists I’d deleted and having already listened to over 4,000 tracks by that point, I honestly couldn’t face having to go back and re-listen to all the singles to work out what would make my top 20 from each country.

OTHER STUFF OF INTEREST

This will be links to a mish mash of stuff, for which more information can be found in the workbook. And yes, this year I did manage to do an OST breakdown – go me! Maybe it’ll make up for not finishing the singles lists.

Debuts

Every year sees a remarkable number of boy groups and soloists debuting in hopes of making it big in the Asian (especially Korean) music industry. 2025 was no exception, with no fewer than 56 groups and 64 soloists (that I know about) making their bid for stardom. The soloist category does include a lot of members from established groups making their solo debuts, so I have split these into a separate playlist from the true rookies.

I was seriously impressed with the quality of many of the debuts this year and found it hard to choose the winners, particularly in the group category. Find out who I rated worthy of being in one of my top 20 playlists below

Christmas/Winter Songs🎄

EXO’s The First Snow (did you honestly think I wasn’t going to mention them anywhere in this post? 😂) was not the only song hitting the top of the charts (both at the beginning and end of the year), and WayV weren’t the only ones to foray into winter/Christmas song territory. In fact, it was more popular than ever before with 131 songs (that I heard) related to the topic – and that was just male artists. From all those tracks I distilled my 20 favourites into a playlist, which while you might not be too interested in right now, as we head towards spring, you should definitely check out when December rolls around again (probably next week with the speed this year is slipping away). There are some excellent songs on there – I love me a bit of Christmas music (at the right time).

Drama and OSTs

I didn’t create a single list of overall favourite OSTs but I did do one for each of the countries, although some have more entries than others. As a caveat, I have to say that I don’t always know whether something is an OST unless it’s explicitly stated or I find out afterwards, so some may have ended up in their respective countries' playlists as singles. I also tend to split down EPs or albums dedicated to a film, drama or webtoon as solo songs.

I did state previously that Liu Yuning, who had a fantastic 2025, would probably sweep the board, and he pretty much did. 6 of his OSTs made it into the Chinese top 20. I think there was only one song of his that didn’t make it into the list. He also made the top 2 places starring in my favourite C-dramas of the year – Dream Within a Dream and The Prisoner of Beauty, and if I had to rank them, which I should do really (maybe in a separate drama post), I’d probably say they were my overall favourite dramas of the year, with the Thai BL Khemjira in 3rd place. I don’t watch many variety shows due to a lack of time, but if I did have a list, Wow the World, in which Liu Yuning also took part (and looked fabulous the whole time), would have been my #1 choice.

There are no playlists for these but there is one for my monthly top 3 OSTs, which includes all those on the lists plus those that didn’t quite make it, yet are still amazing tracks.

Music Videos

Finally, for this post, is the YouTube playlist for my Top 21 favourite MVs of 2025 – yes, I said 21 because after extensive whittling I still couldn’t get it down to 20. They’re all great and are definitely worth watching if you have the time. As with all of my playlists, it’s real mixed bag, from the choreography and artistry of Lay (EXO) and G-DRAGON (BigBang), the cinematography of SB19 and (XIAO ZHAN), through the fantasy stylings of &TEAM, 时代少年团 (Teens In Times) and KEY, the mini dramas of Jeff Satur, NANON, MEYOU and JUNHEE, the twisted and strange ZIOR PARK, LEE CHANHYUK and HUA CHENYU, not to mention the unsettling AM8IC and CLOSE YOUR EYES. Of course, my mid-year battlers YUTA and TEN are also featured.

If I could have added another couple, I would definitely have included Body Language and Stretch by U-KNOW, but 21 was already too many, so I’m putting them here instead. They are every bit as crazy and as much fun as the others and fit the list perfectly (and the album, I-KNOW, that they’re from is excellent too).

As I’ve said throughout, all information, links to playlists and more can be found in the workbook. Honestly, go check it out. I put loads of work into it.

And with that, my 2025 music review is at an end.

I'm Back!!!

Yep, just like a bad penny, I keep turning up (eventually). And now it’s a new year (again), I thought I ought to stop in and say hi (and link the first of this year’s playlists).

I did sneak in a couple of times towards the end of the year to change the playlist and update the links, although I clearly forgot in December 🙈 - it's okay, though, it was mainly Christmas songs, and I made this playlist for them (there was more than that really and you can find the December playlist in the links for a while) - but I’ve honestly been crazy busy and had zero time for actually blogging. I did mean to make a post when Spotify Wrapped and all those other end-of-year league tables started dropping, but again, no time.

For anyone keeping up, the outcome probably wasn’t too much of a surprise (apart from EXO losing their first-place crown and dropping all the way to 4th place for the first time ever 😱 – I know, how???)

So, for those interested in these things, these were my top 5 bands and songs in 2025, according to Spotify.

You know nothing, Spotify! Actually, it knows quite a lot

Look at all those minutes of listening time – it’s almost equivalent to 46 days! (And no, that’s not why I couldn’t blog because I was too busy listening to music, not completely anyway.)

Now, I need to point out here that the Spotify algorithm isn’t the nice (and very useful) round calendar year that I like to use when doing my end of year stats (which is why they publish before Christmas and I don’t until end of January), it’s from whenever the last one ended to whenever they decided to cut off this year (around the first week of November it seems as they confirmed it wasn’t 31 October, but it definitely wasn’t long after), so it’s not really the true picture of my listening for 2025. Except it sort of is.

Being serious, WayV have more than fully justified themselves as my #1 band this year. After the cut-off point for Spotify, they released a fantastic new album 白色定格 (Eternal White) (on 8 December) and, according to the just as unreliable (but at least you can filter by calendar years) last.fm, this album is my #2 most listened to album of the year (not a bad spot to hit within 15 days of release – it was actually at #6 within 3 days 🙈). It was unable to hit the top place in the remaining time as the #1 album has been out since June and even now has almost double the listens, and I still listen to that regularly too. It is the excellent Wonderland by B.I, which explains his #2 place on this year’s list.

This is the second time WayV have hijacked my end-of-year lists with late releases. In 2022, they effortlessly made my top 10 albums of the year with Phantom, despite the album not being released until 28 December (yep, you read that right). At least this time they gave me a bit longer to fall in love with the album, although I think it may well be their best release to date, and that’s saying something, as I was convinced it was their July mini album Big Bands, which helped to take them to the top spot (and kept me alive during all those awful tests in hospital).

Slightly more surprising was Xiumin at #3, but then he is my EXO bias, and him releasing any music is always going to have me streaming like crazy. This year saw not only his second mini album, Interview X, but also several singles, both alone and in collaboration with other artists (very exciting), so maybe I just didn’t notice all those minutes I spent on him, especially earlier in the year.

So, what happened to EXO, I hear you ask? Did you get fed up with all the shenanigans and give up on them, you awful pseudo-fan?

The answer is, of course not. They are still the #1 Korean band (WayV are Chinese) and always will be. They do hold the record for the day I listened to the most K-pop in one day – 8 April 2025 – better known as EXO’s anniversary (their 13th). I listened to pretty much every release by the band, including some solo stuff too, which was an eye-watering 538 minutes of songs, equalling 155 tracks. I think that still qualifies me as a fan, but they just weren’t able to stand the onslaught of some amazing releases, when they themselves didn’t release anything*

*This is not quite true, but there was nothing new on Spotify.

I doubt the #5 entry was much of a surprise either, considering Onew is my ult, ult bias, and one of those things that kept me too busy to blog was finally getting to see him live in concert 😭. He was every bit as amazing as I’d expected him to be – honestly, 2 weeks after the concert I was still getting over the fact that I’d seen him in real life.

In fact, the only reason I got over it at all was that I went to see Oneus in December, and got to not only see up close, but touch hands with (for a second), my bias Hwanwoong, who had made the journey upstairs to meet fans 💖. They were amazing, and I really hope this isn't going to be the last time I get to see them.

And yes, I have been ignoring

I will just say that I support all 9 members, so I support a group comeback with however many members are available at the time – it’s not like we haven’t been missing some for many years now. Is it my ideal choice when all members are available and could be involved? No, absolutely not. But while I fully support EXO-CBX in what they are going through, it’s not fair to the others to ignore their efforts. So, yes, I watched both fan meetings, have pre-ordered the new album, and will be watching every bit of new EXO content I can get my hands on, be it from the group, units, or solos – and I want more of all of them now that Sehun has finally left the post office and made his way home to us.

I mean . . . look . . . there is so much lore going on

How can you be a fan of the group and not be excited? Yes, it's sad that it isn't going to be all of them as we'd all been praying for, but it was sad that Xiumin never got to be on Obsession, cos he would have 100% slayed (and he's still salty about it 🤣).

Anyway, enough about that. Today (well, in my timezone still, at least) is the first anniversary of one of the best debut bands of last year (and it was a tough year, believe me), the wonderful XLOV. They celebrated with a livestream fan meeting, where they sang lots of songs (alas, I was too busy with work to tune in, but I will catch up later). I'm seeing them in February, and I'm very much looking forward to it.

Happy anniversary cuties!

I will be back, but I've got several thousand songs to listen to while working out my end-of-year lists - you think I'm kidding, I've already listened to 843 songs this year (and counting).

The Six Month Review

See, I promised I'd do it . . . and I have.

The first 6 months of 2025 were even busier than 2024, with the monthly playlists totalling 8,859 songs, an increase of 1,778 songs on last year.

My ever-trusty Last.fm stats tell me that I listened to 12,059 songs between 1 January and 30 June, covering 2,161 artists, which is 4,056 different albums, EPs and singles.

Like last year, I did a spreadsheet which shows the breakdown per month of the various types of music I logged. There are still too many OSTs, although this year I am trying to pick a top 3 for each country every month in hopes this will make it easier at the end of the year 😂.

spreadsheet of music types

There was a large increase in singles compared to last year. I think most of this was probably due to discovering more artists from Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines.

According to Receiptify, my top 10 artists for January-June were:

      • B.I
      • EXO
      • Stray Kids
      • Xiumin
      • WayV
      • BII
      • Ryosuke Yamada
      • ALEPH
      • TEN
      • THE ROSE
I will admit to being slightly in shock that my beloved EXO lost the top spot, but given how often I listened to B.I, especially in June, it's not much of a surprise he beat them. I haven't spent much time with the group as a whole apart from on EXO day, when I listened to their entire discography (and loved every minute).

Interestingly, only 4 of the artists in this year's list appeared in last year's too. I'm sad to see Pentagon and The KingDom disappearing from the list, but as they're both on the verge of disbanding* 😭, there hasn't been anything new from them as groups for a long time now and with everything else I needed to listen to, there wasn't that much time to revisit their old work.

*The KingDom just announced they will be releasing a new album soon (finally!), but without leader, Dann, who was suddenly packed off to the military at short notice (he enlisted today😭). At this point, I've given up hope of ever hearing anything from Pentagon as a group again, although maybe Shinwon's return on 20 September might spur them into action 🤞🏻 (EXO's Sehun is back then too - we also need him to get the group back together - we need an OT9 comeback).

So, onto the lists.

Before we start, just a quick reminder that as always, they are split into the 3 categories that Spotify uses - albums, EPs, and singles - I may not always agree with the categorisation, but it's not me that decides where they sit.

Once again, OSTs got lost along the way, but Liu Yuning will probably win everything this year anyway (including best actor in at least 2 C-dramas!). They also cover all Asian music. I haven't split it down into the different countries.

I'm going to reveal my Top 3 in each category; otherwise this post will go on for far too long and get boring, but the playlists have the full top 20 for each category.

As always, I'll be really interested to see which entries remain at the end of the year, especially with a lot of good stuff released post-June and with a lot still to come (*cough* EXO *cough* 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😭😭😭)

So without further ado:

ALBUMS

It's been a really strong year for albums, with at least the top 5 or 6 grabbing me hard and refusing to let go. But, as always, there have to be winners, and at the halfway point of the year, they are the following:

1. B.I  - Wonderland

B.I - Wonderland
B.I - Wonderland 🥇
I've always had a soft spot for B.I, even before he left iKON, and especially with his growth since debuting as a soloist. But since we saw him in concert last year, my appreciation for his work has continued to expand.

Fortunately, he gave us a brand-new full-length album at the beginning of June, ruminating on the end of childhood and the onset of adulthood, the artist effortlessly capturing both elements, particularly in the MV for the lead track Ferris wheel (with Heize). I heard the album, I fell deeply in love (it spent 5 weeks at #1 in my top 5 most-listened-to albums), and I'm still listening to it now.

He also got bonus points (as he always does) for innovative album packaging, which this time included a pop-up book with a Ferris wheel, a magic card version with a pop-up fairground theatre and 2 fairytale storybooks, one each for child and adult.

2.  Cravity - Dare to Crave

Cravity - Dare to Crave
Cravity - Dare to Crave 🥈
Considering this album wasn't released until 23 June (yes, really!), it did a fantastic job of taking hold of my heart and not letting go. I'm not sure whether it's their best album, but it is bloody brilliant, and my love hasn't diminished in the following months. CRAVITY are a fantastic band, but are also sadly, still largely underrated despite their win on Road to Kingdom: Ace of Ace last year (which featured a whole host of underrated bands and you should definitely watch the show if you haven't seen it).

Led by the super fun lead track SET NET GO?!, this is the perfect summer boy band album.

3. Ryosuke Yamada - RED

Ryosuke Yamada
Ryosuke Yamada - RED 🥉
I already knew Ryosuke Yamada, as both an actor (he is absolutely amazing in 親愛なる僕へ殺意をこめて (The Killer Inside) and as a member of J-pop band Hey! Say! JUMP, but this album surprised me, with its catchy tunes and an underlying sultriness that had me relistening again and again, and the title track RED is a banger. This is another one that's not leaving my playlist anytime soon - both this and the albums above were still in my top 5 most-listened-to albums for August, which shows how strong they all are.

If anything, there were more excellent EPs than there were albums (as is always the case - there are just more released), so it was even harder to choose a top 20, but these 3 EPs really were the cream of the crop for me in the first 6 months.

Yuta - Twisted Paradise
YUTA - TWISTED PARADISE 🥇
YUTA (from NCT 127) absolutely blew me away last year with his first album, Depth, and then he came back with this, and rocked my world even harder than before. It was a close toss-up between this EP and the next one as to which would make #1, but this just about won out as it has a particularly eye-catching MV for the title track.

He is releasing a full-length album in October, so it will be interesting to see where this and his new release land in the end-of-year lists, as I'm sure he'll be there.

TEN - Humanity
TEN - Humanity 🥈

Not content with releasing a full-length album, Stunner (which made #5 in my album list), and his work with WAYV (who will definitely be in my end-of-year list), TEN decided to release a Japanese EP too, and it's excellent. Silence, the lead track, is just about perfect.

GOT7 - WINTER HEPTAGON
GOT7 - WINTER HEPTAGON 🥉
Ah, GOT7. Our favourite mischief makers had been missing for a while, with the dreaded enlistment that curses all boy bands eventually. But with Jinyoung's release from the Army (and a spoiler given by him on discharge day 🤭), the 7 were soon back in action with this excellent EP, and the superb Python as the lead track. Really, given its length, it should have been an album, but Spotify classified it as an EP, so here it is - and very good it is too.

This is always the hardest category for me, as there are so many good songs released each month, some of which you don't fully appreciate until much later.

Unlike last year, where a couple of real favourites emerged quite early on and stayed with me (even until now, they're still regular playlist favourites), there hasn't been a track I have to listen to at least once daily in the first 6 months. But while this list is very much an 'on the day it was made' list, as songs could easily go up or down, and others, as of now missing, could have made the list at another time, all 20 are great songs and fully deserve their place, and none more so than those that made my top 3.

Leeon - Supernatural

Sadly, no MV exists for this, so you can only hear it on streaming sites. I honestly don't know much about it or the singer, except that it's great. According to Spotify, it's Leeon's debut release, so it's likely to feature in my end-of-year list there.

BIG Naughty is one of those artists whose work and collaborations I always really enjoy and will always playlist at the end of the month for top 3, but often don't quite make it into the lists. LEE CHANYUK (AKMU), is someone I have something of a secret crush on, as he is so unapologetically weird but also a musical prodigy of the highest calibre. Putting them together was a genius idea, and this wonderful single came out of the collaboration. More, please 🙏🏻

Once again, I know absolutely nothing about REIKO, except that I love his voice and I always enjoy listening to his songs. He too, didn't produce a MV for this song, but he does have this live version from his tour, and it showcases his vocals perfectly.

AND THAT'S IT, FOLKS!

Thank you if you've stuck with the post this far. I honestly appreciate it. I'd also be really interested to know any songs, EPs or Albums that are in your lists for the first half of the year. Please feel free to share.

I'm not sure whether I'll post again this month. I'm aware that I promised a drama catch-up quite some time back, and since then I have watched a lot more dramas, some of which were actually pretty good.

I am supposed to be recuperating, but as that basically involves sitting around all day (watching other people play Hogwarts Legacy), I might get around to doing something. To be honest, sitting around all day isn't much different to being at work, except there's no stress from ridiculous deadlines and stuff, I don't need to set an alarm to get up, and best of all, I can legitimately go and have a nap whenever I want one.

Until next time, stay healthy and safe, and enjoy all the upcoming releases this month will bring.
